Modern defense systems must seize every capability across logistics and operational planning to ensure battlefield dominance. Designated as a critical technology by the U.S. Department of War, quantum technologies represent the next frontier in this domain.

Through a series of detailed case studies, we outline how embracing quantum technology now can deliver operational resilience, strengthened defense posture, and tactical overmatch for the warfighter.

Each application provides estimated timelines for quantum advantage, projected to arrive between 2027 and 2029 in alignment with published hardware roadmaps:

Convoy routing: Build logistics solutions that deliver materiel on time and in order while minimizing risk and showing resilience against disruption.

Strategic airlift: Efficiently supply a wide range of frontline commands with materiel specific to their operational needs over multiple domains and theatres globally.

Real-world use cases

The teams have achieved outstanding progress, and the results of this challenge confirm that quantum technologies have the potential to shape the next generation of aircraft.

We were pleasantly surprised to see the optimal routing of 26 trains over 18 minutes of real scheduling data for the full station topology being realised on a real quantum device, which otherwise wouldn’t have been possible without using Q-CTRL’s optimisation solver.

Optimally routing 120 convoys can take more than a month of classical computation. The Australian Army is evaluating the potential of quantum computing to provide improvements; however, it’s been difficult to validate the feasibility of a quantum solution due to hardware noise. With Fire Opal, an algorithmic enhancement software, we are able to achieve results on quantum computers that build confidence in our quantum roadmap.
